Honda Launches EM1 e: Electric Motorcycle: Affordable Commuting and Shopping Solution

Honda Motor Co. is preparing to introduce its first electric motorcycle for individual customers, marking a significant milestone for the company. The EM1 e: model, designed with a focus on commuting and shopping, is scheduled to go on sale on August 24th, as announced by Honda on May 19th. This will be the first time Honda makes an electric motorcycle available in the domestic market.

The EM1 e: will fall under the same category as 50cc motorcycles under the Road Traffic Law. When fully charged, the vehicle can travel up to 53 kilometers, providing a practical range for short-distance trips. Charging the motorcycle is a convenient process, as power can be supplied through a regular electrical socket at home. The EM1 e: features a removable battery that can be charged using a dedicated charger. It takes approximately six hours to fully charge one exhausted battery.

 

Honda expects to sell approximately 3,000 units of the EM1 e: annually. The motorcycle will be priced at 299,200 yen ($2,100), inclusive of tax. This competitive pricing aims to make electric motorcycles more accessible to a broader range of customers.

In addition to the EM1 e:, Honda will also offer three other electric vehicles to individual users starting in June. Initially limited to corporate users for business purposes such as deliveries, these three models will now be available for individual customers. The first model is the Benly e:, a motorbike equipped with a rack for carrying goods. The second model is the Gyro e:, a three-wheel scooter offering enhanced stability. Lastly, the Gyro Canopy e: is a covered model that provides additional protection from the elements. These electric vehicles will be priced between 649,000 yen ($4,600.00) and 1 million yen ($7,135.00) after tax, offering a range of options for customers.

 

The shift toward electric motorcycles is a response to the global trend of decarbonization and the increasing focus on sustainable transportation solutions. Major motorcycle manufacturers, including Honda, are prioritizing the development and production of electric models. Honda aims to introduce a total of 10 electric motorcycles worldwide by 2025, with the EM1 e: being the fourth model in this lineup. The company has set an ambitious goal of reaching a 15 percent share of electric models among all new motorcycles by 2030.

 

Suzuki Motor Corp. is also planning to launch an electric motorcycle in fiscal year 2024. By fiscal year 2030, they aim to have eight electric motorcycle models available worldwide, accounting for 25 percent of their entire motorcycle lineup. This demonstrates the industry's commitment to embracing electric technology and transitioning toward a more sustainable future.

With the upcoming release of Honda's EM1 e: electric motorcycle and the wider availability of electric options for individual users, customers will have more choices to support their daily transportation needs while contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions. These advancements in the motorcycle industry align with the growing demand for sustainable mobility and pave the way for a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
